Sumner Volunteers Help Assemble Bags of Nutritious Foods for 2,000 Students in Need

GSF Foundation

GSF Sumner associates volunteered at Emergency Food Network’s Spring Break Bags Event on Saturday, March 25, 2017, and helped assemble bags of nutritious and kid-friendly foods that will be distributed to 2,000 kids in need attending Pierce County, Washington schools. Many children in Pierce County rely on their schools to provide free or reduced lunch during the week. When schools go on break, these meals are no longer provided and the children must find food elsewhere. The Spring Break Bags are distributed to children and their families the week prior to a school break so they will have fresh and nutritious food to get them through the school holidays.

“I love this program because you see instantaneous results and during the following week at school kids get to take the food home so that they will not go hungry,” said Laura Kniss, chair of the GSF Foundation Sumner committee. “It will sometimes take a small first grader four or five trips to get all the food home!”

The Sumner volunteers will be honored at Emergency Food Network’s Recognition Breakfast on April 12, 2017, for their dedication to helping hungry children in Pierce County.
