Food insecurity doesn’t always look the way we expect. It’s stretching groceries at home to last one more week or a parent skipping dinner so their child can eat. In the summer, when school cafeterias close, many kids also lose a reliable source of meals. Across the United States, hunger affects 48 million people, including one in five children.

The GSF Foundation’s Focus on Food initiative channels awareness into meaningful support when families need it most. Each May, volunteer‑led Foundation committees engage local food banks to learn more about food insecurity and give back within their communities.
“Our committees lead with purpose and step up when and where communities need support most,” said Vanessa Hugon Badal, GSF Foundation Executive Director. “Six years into Focus on Food, their dedication continues to widen our reach, deepen partnerships, and multiply the impact we create together.”
Since 2020, Focus on Food has helped fund the equivalent of more than six million meals, placing strong emphasis on the summer months when access to school‑based nutrition pauses for food-insecure families. Blending national reach with local insight, all 33 committees across the U.S. participate in this core program. Collectively, committees contribute to a shared annual goal to provide the equivalent of one million meals by the end of the year.
Associate involvement fuels that progress. Committees award grants to eligible Feeding America–affiliated food banks. The national Foundation matches those grants with donations of up to $5,000 per organization. Support from Golden State Foods’ business partners and associate alumni makes that fund matching possible. Many teams also expand their reach further through food drives, pantry support, volunteer shifts, and fresh‑produce harvesting efforts that extend food access across their regions.
Applying Food Safety Expertise to Community Impact in New York
In Penn Yan, New York, KanPak associates combined grant funding with hands‑on support for Foodlink and the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. Volunteers sorted and packed food, shared food safety knowledge during facility visits, and helped maximize the impact of every donation.
“Our associates care deeply about how food moves safely from source to table,” said Sondra Warriner, Accounting Specialist and GSFF Committee Chair for KanPak New York. “Focus on Food gave us a chance to share what we know with our community partners and help build up the systems that get food into the hands of families who need it.”

Leaders Building Long-Term Partnerships in East Alabama
Across East Alabama, sustained commitment and leadership engagement anchor the GSF Opelika Committee’s Focus on Food efforts. The facility has supported the Food Bank of East Alabama since 2019 through donations, volunteer involvement, and continued partnership. Nathan Murphy, GSF Group Vice President, Operations — Protein Products, extends that commitment through board service, strengthening governance, collaboration, and the organization’s capacity to respond to evolving community needs.
“Access to safe, nutritious food connects directly to our values and our responsibility as a food company,” said Nathan. “Board service allows leaders to support families beyond our walls while investing in consistency, accountability, and long‑term impact across East Alabama.”

Turning Learning into a School‑Based Food Pantry in Texas
In North Texas, the Burleson GSFF Committee transformed learning into lasting support through its partnership with the Tarrant Area Food Bank. After touring the organization and exploring its programs, committee members sponsored an on‑campus food pantry at a nearby elementary school. The pantry now provides steady access to healthy, kid‑friendly groceries throughout the school year, supporting learning and stability close to home.
“Food insecurity doesn’t pause, and our commitment can’t either,” said Lindsey Munoz, Senior Human Resources Generalist and GSFF Burleson Committee Programs Chair. “This pantry shows how associate involvement can turn awareness into meaningful, lasting support for families.”

Across regions and roles, Focus on Food reflects a shared mindset: learn first, then act with intention. Through technical expertise, leadership service, and community‑driven efforts, committees convert insights into sustained support for families facing hunger.
