A new bike can inspire independence, adventure, friendship, and confidence in learning new skills. Through the GSF Foundation's Bike Build and Pedal to Perfection programs in 2026, more than 300 children across the country gained not only bikes, but also experiences, encouragement, and a reminder that their communities care about them.

The Bike Build program brings children together with adult mentors to assemble their own bikes, teaching lessons that reach far beyond nuts and bolts. As each wheel turns into place and every handlebar gets tightened, participants practice perseverance, problem-solving, and goal setting. By the end of the day, each child leaves with a new bike, helmet, and lock, along with a sense of pride that only comes from building something with their own hands.

For the GSF Foundation committee at Quality Custom Distribution (QCD) in Denver, Colorado, one unforgettable moment unfolded when a young boy eagerly waited for his first ride. He asked again and again when he could hop on his bike, unable to contain his excitement while volunteers completed the final adjustments. That anticipation, followed by the ride itself, left a lasting impression on everyone nearby.

"One young boy's excitement captured everything this program represents,” shared Wade Feaster, Safety and Training Manager and GSFF Communications Chair for QCD Denver. “Despite facing health challenges, he couldn't wait to take his first ride, and the fist bump he shared afterward reminded me that these experiences spark joy and unforgettable memories."

At the La Puente Boys & Girls Club in California, children gained hands-on experience while building bikes many would soon call their own. For several participants, the event marked the first time they had ever picked up a wrench.

"Many of the kids had never owned a bike and had never worked with tools before,” said Anthony Rendon, Training Manager and GSFF Communications Chair for GSF City of Industry. “By the end of the event, they rolled away knowing they had built something themselves, and that sense of accomplishment showed in every smile across the parking lot."

As a first-time committee participating in the Bike Build program, the QCD Kansas City, Missouri team saw firsthand how community support can create lasting opportunities for local children.

"This experience gave our team a chance to connect with students in a meaningful way through our partnership with Gladstone Elementary,” said Rosy Rodriguez, Operations Clerk and GSFF Chair for the QCD Kansas City committee. “When we received photos afterward, those images showed kids ready to make memories, stay active, and enjoy all the possibilities that came with their new bikes."

From first rides and new skills to growing confidence and stronger community connections, GSF Foundation committees across the country continue to create opportunities that help children move forward, one pedal stroke at a time.
