Today, the Golden State Foods Foundation launched a nationwide campaign, “To the Moon and Back.” The volunteer competition leverages the steps that GSF associates take on a daily basis in the warehouse, office and beyond to gain pledges to reach an individual goal of two miles per day for 60 consecutive days. If each associate reaches their goal, GSF will log 477,710 miles, which is the equivalent distance from earth to the moon and back.
“This is the first time that GSF is combining fitness and the Foundation to encourage associate wellness and giving back to our local communities,” said Bill Sanderson, fundraising and resource committee chair for GSF Foundation, and senior executive vice president and chief administrative officer for GSF. “We are excited and privileged to have former NASA Flight Director, Eugene Kranz as this program’s Honorary Chair. Eugene is a true inspiration and our motivation for the ‘To the Moon and Back’ campaign.”
To the Moon and Back” is a national initiative, with 29 facilities across the United States participating. The campaign invites GSF associates to gain pledges for each mile they log using an online fundraising tool. If each associate who participates raises $250 in pledges, the Foundation potentially could raise $1 million for children and families in need.
“It’s been 23-years since I retired from NASA, and I’m so proud that my work for the space program still inspires others, especially when it involves helping kids in our community,” said Eugene. “To the Moon and Back combines some of my favorite elements: competition, teamwork and charity, and I’m very excited to see the positive impact that this program will have on children and families in need.”
“We’re thrilled to find new ways to engage our associates and their friends and family through an activity that combines the wellness of our people with the good work of our Foundation,” said Anna Lisa Lukes, GSF director of corporate social responsibility and executive director of the GSF Foundation.
This first-of-its-kind event is set to blast off on March 1, and will conclude on April 30. GSF associates who participate have the chance to win various prizes, including “When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions” DVDs, wireless Beats by Dre headphones, NutriBullets, S’well water bottles and more. The funds raised through the “To the Moon and Back” will benefit charities in the communities where GSF associates live and work.
